Utter Confusion and Horror

To my surprise, Ian Riggs used to be a paramedic in the Army before fame found him. We didn’t have any catgut to hand, but Ellis found a pot of superglue which Ian proceeded to use to seal up the head wound. A first aid kit – also supplied by Ellis – provided bandages and some duct tape finished the job, ensuring the improvised dressing would stay on Geoffrey’s head.

‘There is surprisingly little swelling,’ Ian commented as he tried to close the wound. ‘The blow must have been a glancing one. You were lucky.’

Geoffrey chuckled, then winced. ‘Oooh. Mustn’t laugh,’ he winced again with his eyes closed. ‘I don’t feel very lucky.’

‘No, you most likely don’t’ agreed the former paramedic. ‘Still, I think this could be a lot worse. The skin split so neatly one could almost think it was made with a knife.’

The wedding guests began to drift away, but they did so in clusters or clumps, sticking together for safety because there was a killer in the house, and no one knew who it was. Nevertheless, there was dinner waiting for those who were yet to get their evening meal and that was enough to convince them to return to the ballroom and central area of the house.

Vince produced an evidence bag from a pocket of his perfectly tailored suit – he said he always kept a few with him, along with rubber gloves for picking up evidence. According to the private investigator, these were standard tools for someone in his line of work.

The brass candlestick went into a bag and was sealed for the police. Vince even took a bunch of photographs.

I wanted dearly to ask Vince to take over and be the one investigating. It was what he did for a living, but pride was stopping me. Stupid pride. I don’t think of myself as a stubborn woman. Genuinely, I don’t think I am, but I was being stubborn now.

Two deaths with no apparent reason or connection and now what looked like a considered attempt to murder Geoffrey. If only I could find out who the mystery man was, maybe that would give me a clue.

‘Vince,’ I called out his name to get his attention. ‘Did you hear anything back from your friends in the police about the mystery man downstairs?’

He tutted and huffed, taking out his phone to check it before saying, ‘Not yet. They will get to it. I’ll give them a call and see if they can spare me a few minutes to run it through their system now.’

I let him get on with that and turned my attention back to my grooms.

‘How are you feeling, Geoffrey?’ I came down to one knee so I was at his eye level.

He shrugged, then winced at the pain doing so created. ‘I have a corker of a headache,’ he winced again. ‘I think lying down somewhere dark might be in order.’

The decision to send them back to their room and have food brought up to them was made on the spot.
